Nuclear Waste
I oppose the plans to build a nuclear waste repository on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation. I think it is irresponsible to place nuclear fission waste so close to a populated area and without any way to remove it to another location, as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has denied permission for it to be moved once it gets there. However, we do need to present incentives for the Goshutes to take an opposite course for their own survival.
I oppose the plan to move nuclear waste to a permanent repository in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The main reason I oppose this is because of the fact that such waste will be transported through Utah, including downtown Salt Lake City. It is too dangerous for Utahns.
I support the bipartisan effort with Nevada to keep nuclear waste on the site it is used on. They chose to have a nuclear reactor in their states, the waste should remain there. However, I also support developing recycling programs for nuclear waste, so less is produced and more is reused.
The main way to prevent more waste is by investing in nuclear fusion, which is cleaner and less wasteful. I would fight to preserve funding for nuclear research programs at the University of Utah and expand them to other schools in the state.
